Emerging Craft Workers Programme
Carlow LEADER Company’s ‘Emerging Craft Workers Programme’ in partnership with the Department of Social and Family Affairs is an exciting initiative aimed at developing the craft skills of individuals who wish to engage in a craft related activity in order to generate income and employment opportunities in the sector.
The programme which began in October 2007 has gone from strength to strength and has seen the development of a number of skills among emerging craft workers including ceramics, jewellery making, woodwork, sewing skills and basket making. The provision of skills sampling at the outset meant that participants could test a number of crafts before identifying a chosen skills training programme.
Sewing techniques was very popular among participants and has seen the production of high-quality home, gift and fashion-ware items as a key outcome of the training. These products will be on display at a craft exhibition in Carlow town where emerging craft workers will collaborate with established craft makers from the region, which is being organised by the WIND craft programme also developed by Carlow LEADER.
This provides a real opportunity for emerging craft workers to market their products and to progress their employment options.
